Privacy Policy for Restroom Rater
Last updated: [Nov. 25, 2025]
This Privacy Policy explains how Restroom Rater (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use our mobile application (the “App”).
By using Restroom Rater, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Policy.
This document is a general template based on the features of Restroom Rater (ratings, comments, favorites, location, etc.). It is not legal advice. You should have a lawyer review and customize it for your specific situation and location.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information when you use the App.
1.1 Information You Provide
Ratings and reviews
When you rate a restroom or gas station and submit a comment, we store:
The star rating you give
Your written comment or review text
The location or station associated with the rating
The time and date of submission
Poll responses and other in-app input
If you answer polls or other in-app questions, we store your responses linked to your anonymous user profile.
We do not require you to create a traditional account with an email address and password in order to use the App.
1.2 Device and Pseudonymous User Information
To operate the App without traditional accounts, we may use a pseudonymous identifier derived from your device.
This may include:
A device identifier or hashed device identifier
App version and basic device information (such as operating system version and device model)
This information is used to:
Distinguish one user from another
Associate your ratings, comments, favorites, and poll votes with a single anonymous profile
Help you manage your own contributions within the App (such as showing which comments are yours)
We do not use this information to try to personally identify you in the real world.
1.3 Location Information
Restroom Rater helps you find and rate restrooms and gas stations. For this purpose, we may collect:
Approximate location, such as when you enter a ZIP code or similar region information
Precise location, when you choose features that use your current location (for example, a “Use My Location” button) and grant the App location permissions on your device
Location information is used to:
Display nearby gas stations and restrooms
Improve search results for locations
Provide location-based features and suggestions
You can control location permissions through your device settings. If you disable location access, some features of the App may not function as intended.
1.4 Usage Data and Logs
We may collect certain information automatically when you use the App, such as:
Actions taken within the App (for example, which screens you visit and which buttons you tap)
Error messages and crash logs
Time and date of your interactions with the App
This information helps us understand how the App is used and improve performance, stability, and user experience.
1.5 Data Stored Locally on Your Device
The App may store some data locally on your device, including but not limited to:
Your list of favorite or bookmarked stations
Cached data to improve performance and reduce network usage
Some locally stored data may be encrypted or otherwise protected. Local data is generally only accessible on your device and can often be removed by uninstalling the App or clearing App data in your device settings.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for purposes such as:
Operating, maintaining, and improving the App and its features
Displaying restroom and gas-station ratings, comments, and review counts
Showing you your own ratings, comments, favorites, and poll participation
Enforcing basic protections against abuse, spam, or inappropriate behavior (for example, using anonymous identifiers and “human verification” screens)
Fixing bugs, diagnosing crashes, and improving performance
Analyzing how features are used so we can improve design and functionality
Complying with legal obligations, resolving disputes, and enforcing our terms and policies
We do not sell your personal information.
3. Legal Bases for Processing (Where Applicable)
In certain regions, such as the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions that require a legal basis for processing personal data, we rely on the following legal bases:
Performance of a contract: We process data where necessary to provide and operate the App and its core features.
Legitimate interests: We process data to improve the App, maintain security, prevent abuse or misuse, and understand how users interact with the App, in ways that do not override your privacy rights.
Consent: For certain optional features (for example, access to precise location), we rely on your consent. You may withdraw consent by changing your permissions in your device settings.
4. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your information. We may share information in the following limited circumstances:
4.1 Service Providers
We may share information with trusted third-party service providers who help us operate the App, such as:
Cloud database and backend providers (for example, hosting ratings, comments, and related data)
Analytics or logging services (for crash reports, error tracking, and performance monitoring)
Mapping and location service providers (for example, to look up station details or generate directions)
These providers are only authorized to use your information as necessary to provide services to us and are required to protect it appropriately.
4.2 Legal Requirements and Safety
We may disclose information if we believe it is reasonably necessary to:
Comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or government requests
Protect the rights, property, or safety of our users, the public, or our own operations
Detect, prevent, or address security or technical issues, fraud, or abuse
4.3 Business Transfers
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, restructuring, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to continued protection consistent with this Privacy Policy.
5. Data Retention
We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary to:
Provide and maintain the App
Fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy
Comply with legal obligations
Resolve disputes and enforce our agreements
In general:
Ratings, comments, and poll responses may be retained as part of the overall dataset that powers the App.
Locally stored data (such as favorites) may remain on your device until you delete the App or clear its data.
We may anonymize or aggregate data so that it can no longer reasonably be associated with a particular user, and may retain such anonymized data for a longer period.
6. Data Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
You can help protect your device and information by:
Keeping your device’s operating system up to date
Using a passcode, biometric lock, or other security feature on your device
Downloading the App only from official app stores
7. International Transfers
Depending on where you are located and where our service providers are based, your information may be processed in countries that may have different data protection laws than your country.
Where required by law, we take steps to ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information when it is transferred internationally.
8. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have certain rights regarding your personal data, including:
The right to access the information we hold about you
The right to request correction of inaccurate information
The right to request deletion of certain information
The right to object to or restrict certain processing
The right to data portability in some cases
The right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent
Because Restroom Rater uses a pseudonymous identifier rather than traditional email-based accounts, we may need additional information to verify that a request relates to the correct anonymous profile.
To exercise these rights (where applicable), you can contact us using the details in the Contact Us section below. We may not be able to fulfill a request if we cannot reasonably verify your identity or association with the relevant data.
You can also manage certain choices directly through your device and the App, such as:
Turning location permissions on or off in your device settings
Clearing App data or uninstalling the App to remove locally stored information on your device
9. Children’s Privacy
The App is not intended for children under the age of 13 (or a higher age where required by applicable law), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age.
If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under the applicable minimum age without verifiable parental consent, we will take reasonable steps to delete that information as soon as possible.
If you believe that a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below.
10. Third-Party Services and Links
The App may provide links to third-party websites or services, such as external map or directions apps.
This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third parties, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any information to them.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this document.
In some cases, we may provide additional notice (such as a message within the App) about material changes to this Policy where required by law.
Your continued use of the App after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated Policy.
